  • Daniel’s Tale: The Importance of Practical Skills BEFORE University Education

2016 was my graduation year from the university and was indeed one of the happiest days of my existence. I graduated with a 4.2 CGPA and I was considered one of the best students in my department by my lecturers and coursemates.

A proud graduate of Software engineering, from a prestigious university, yes, that was me, stop playing! (laughs)

Call me a bookworm, that won’t be an understatement because I gave it my all. While my coursemates were creating fun times for themselves, I would be in the library studying. I never had time to have a girlfriend like my mates. I saw that as a distraction, Omo bookaholic!!!

I organized tutorial classes for my coursemates especially those who found it difficult in writing JAVA programming language. It was absolute fun helping my coursemate in that capacity.
I could recall on one of such occasions, small-statured me, in front of the lecture hall, with the hall fully packed with my coursemates, I was busy writing Java programming language like a pro, and I was writing that on a board, yes you heard me right, on a board! I was pretty sure of what I was writing or so I thought.

Back on graduation day, just like every graduating student, I was full of optimism, I believed I will easily fit into the workforce after my NYSC, and I was 100% certain of that.
So, in 2017, I went to serve my father’s land and in 2018, I was done and out to face the world.

True to my optimism, because of my good grades and result, I was hired by a tech firm by mid-2018, and bingo! It dawned on me that I had only written Java programming language with a computer on a few occasions and right here in reality, it meant nothing. My first project or call it assignment was a huge flop in that my good grades meant nothing.

Mhennn, I didn’t need anyone to advise me to seek help while at my job. I had six months of probation to prove my worth. Omo! I needed an online study.

That was how I did a reverse, went back to school while at my job and got the required hands-on training and before the elapse of 6 months, I could deliver, and over-deliver on my job and I got a permanent placement with the firm.

Why am I sharing this experience, it is because I want everyone reading this not to rush into the university like I did after my secondary education, but rather go look for someplace to acquire some quality skills before your university education. It doesn’t matter if it is one year or two years. It is better to have an onward movement than to spend four years in the university and then reverse.

With good skills in the university, you can even make yourself some good bux and support your parents while there.

I hope you’ve learnt one or two from my experience, I’m talking to you a secondary school graduate with first-hand experience.
Don’t be like me!!!
